The small, bright purple flowers are about 1 cm in length whilst the seedpods are flat and skinny, 3-4 cm in length. Interestingly, that is the one species within the genus Trifidacanthus, which is characterized by its trifid (3-way split) spines and is distinct from Desmodium and related genera.
