Dates are small, sweet fruits that grow in large clusters on palm trees. A single bunch can contain up to 1,000 dates. Dried dates are very high in sugar – a minimum of half of their total weight. Dates are found in hot, dry climates. The palm grows to about 23 meters (75 feet) tall. Its stem, strongly marked by the pruned stub of the base of the old leaves, terminates in a crown of beautiful, glossy, pinnate leaves about 5 m (16 ft) tall. Flower spikes branch from leaf axils that emerged the previous year. The trunk furnishes the timber and the leaves furnish the roofing material. Leaflets are used in making baskets. Leaf bases and fruit stalks are used for fuel and rope. The fibers are processed into packing materials. The seeds are ground and used as stock feed
